  • Graphic & Text Distort when added to timeline

Posted by Kevin Quinn on June 8, 2011 at 6:42 pm

OK I know this is a problem but I just cannot fix. I have a photoshop graphic the size is 966 X 657. That is the size that was sent to me. I import the file into FCP and click on the image and the image is crisp and clear. I drop it into the timeline and the quality is terrible it just blurs & distorts. I am editing in a 4X3 format My sequence preset is set to DV NTSC 48. What can I do to correct this?

    Thank you for any help

Right-click on the clip in the timeline and select “Remove attributes”. In the window that pops up, select “Basic Motion” for sure, and maybe “Crop”, “Distort”, etc. This will return the clip to it’s native settings, rather than squeezing it to fit on the timeline.

    Good luck!

No luck. It seem to change to original size so I made it smaller to fit the screen but the text still looks terrible. I put the graphic & text on a high def timeline and it was fine. I also tried the sequence preset that says apple intermediate codec720 the graphic was fine, but the video does not fill the screen. Any other suggestions?

Thank you again for the help.

Well the DV codec is ugly for text and grfx.
Check your basic motion settings on the element when in sequence.

Change Sequence settings to DV 50 or prores after the edit is locked and it will look much better.

First, you’ve already seen that the DV codec is horrific. The HD sequences you’ve tried are better because they work in 4:2:2 color space as compared to DV’s 4:2:0 color space. As Chris said, use DV50 (otherwise known as DVCPro50), which creates the smallest files of the SD codecs that work in 4:2:2 color space.
