i know i can create a Motion project to do this, but want to do something that is more “real time” in FCP. i want some simple text to scroll up from the bottom of the screen and slowly fade out when the words reach about half-way up the screen. i see how the masks work in Motion, but again not really wanting to use a Motion project for this (though it might end up being the best overall solution). i see that there are masks in FCP video filters as well, but haven’t got them to work as i think they should yet. i’ve also tried just bringing over a single image of a Motion mask, but it shows up as a solid black frame. any ideas?

You can do this with Boris Title Crawl in your effects-video generators- boris tab. Create the text and then adjust mask end. Adjust the blending to make the fade smooth.

Create a white matte. Then crop it with a soft edge in your Motion tab as desired. Put it on the track under what you are wanting to mask and put the “Travel Matte – Luma” transfer mode on it also. Done!
