Is it just me, or does this new graph editor, although a welcome feature, not behave at all like most other applications with curve editors, i.e. lightwave, maya? If I take a layer that I have and keyframe it’s position several times all over my comp space and then go into the graph editor of my animation, I can’t seem to find how to make my animation curve behave like spline interpolation so that it just makes a smooth curver following my keyframes. All I can seem to get is either step, linear, or auto bezier, which seems to ease in and out of every keyframe.

Is that what auto bezier is supposed to be, spline? I’m just having a hard time coming from a 3D apps curve editor and finding the similarities in the After effects one. Can someone explain how it works, or point me toward some documentation that explains it, it’s just frustrating. Thanks!

Though there’s now a graph editor, temporal and spatial interpolation are still separate (unlike in 3D apps, where they are normally locked together). AE’s keyframe behaviors haven’t changed. This means you still have to adjust them individually (temporal in the graph editor, spatial in the comp viewer).

Aaaaah, I guess I kinda knew that, but never realised it. Thanks for clearing that up. I’m sure others have suggested it before, but I think that things would be a heck of a lot better if they did lock spatial and temporal curves together like 3d apps. Thanks for the tips.

I’m sure Adobe already knows this ;-), but it never hurts to officially file a feature request if this is very important to you.

But like you said, the graph editor is very cool (try selecting a bunch of keyframes by dragging a box around them, and scaling them in value or time… utterly cool!) – but at the same time it opens the door for so much more coolness, in future releases hopefully.

You can change the shape of your motion path by dragging keyframes in the Value Graph (VG), this is something you couldn’t do in earlier versions. You can OPTION/ALT drag on keyframes in the Value Graph but that changes the interpolation of the Speed Graph. When I first used the Graph Editor I kept trying to option drag out handles on the value graph. I’m really not sure why Adobe choose this behaviour, it makes the Value Graph for Position a bit of a lame duck.

Best case would be something like Flame where you can toggle between adjusting the motion path or the graph depending on your preference.

Yes… and I’d like its render speed, too – at the price of an AE upgrade if possible 😉

    Hey

search my earlier posts about BEZIER splines!
    This makes me crazy to!
No bezier controls on the keyframes itself!
No ability to create keyframes on the CHANNEL you need (like X only, instead of XYZ at the same time)
No way of editing the splines from Y axis without affecting X and Z also!

Let me put it this way! Its a very very unprofessional graph editor!
And nobody seems to mind!. You cannot even do a simple bouncing ball. Because the X axis is affected by the Y’s velocity. Making it look like crap.

So something about it Adobe. Plzzz.

    Look…

I’ve got a couple of feature requests for Adobe myself. And there’s always something we’d like to see behave differently. But trust me, certain features seem more straighforward to program than they really are. If it was easy to give all of us what we want, they’d surely do it.

But your posts on this subject have become highly repetitive and are beginning to sound like flaming. We’d be happy to point you to solutions to your problems, but you don’t really seem to want solutions, but just vent your frustration.

If there’s another application that serves your needs better, go on and use it and quit your trolls here.

    I’m not flaming!

I really love love love AE. It still has the fastest workflow for MotionGraphics.
But this keyframe issues are really starting to frustrate me because I really dont wanna move to DF.
DF is still not motiongraphic oriented but its graph editor is like it should be. ‘Normal’ 🙂

I just want to get a reaction from someone from adobe’s team.(are there AE programmers on this forum?)
Why adobe chooses this way of keyframe handeling. And if its technicaly hard to change it?
I was more than exited when I saw the 7.0 demo about the Graph.
But I just cannot describe how dissapointed I am right now. 🙁
So sorry if i seem flamish!

If you really want a response, then email the Adobe After Effects team at AfterEffectsATadobeDOTcom

That is the best way to contact them. They do get by the Cow AE forum but the best way is directly at the email address I just gave you.
