AE CS3 (with Production Premium): When I include audio in my RAM previews, at first, the previews are instantaneous (as they are supposed to be), but after 15 minutes or so, AE starts to take a long time to RAM preview any comp that has audio in it. When I disable audio for RAM preview, everything goes fast again. If I shut down AE, and start again, everything is good again – but the same problem starts all over again and eventually, I have the same problem with audio. Any ideas?

I have 4 GB of RAM.
I have enabled the 3GB switch.
    Win XP Pro.
Dell Precision T7400 – Dual Quad core.
    Lots of HD space.
    Nvidia Quadro FX 570.
    Sound Card: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi

i would think it would be a problem with either the ram cache not clearing as it should or a problem with the media cache.

if you are using compressed audio files, the problem is likely the media cache. this is where ae caches file types that it has trouble decoding quickly (like mp3s). if you think that is the problem, you could try converting any compressed audio files to aiffs or wavs. ae should not need to cache those audio files.

if it is not the media cache, then it may be the ram cache… the next time you see this happening, try choosing edit>purge>all from the menu.

    Hey Kevin,

The files I am working with are .wav files. And purging doesn’t seem to help. And the problem continues to persist. I also tried using both my sound card and onboard sound and still have the same problems.

I don’t know much about working with audio but I noticed there are sections in Preferences called AUDIO OUTPUT MAPPING and AUDIO HARDWARE (and that AUDIO HARDWARE has a setting section that allows tweaking of something called “DirectSound Output Ports). Are there any possible answers to my problem here?
