  Gradient layer mask

  I’m still learning photoshop but I have a problem in CS2. I was able to create a layer mask then apply a gradient to that mask when the mask was selected. That was CS1. Now in CS2 I can’t seem to do that. Can anyone explain how this is done in CS2?
