gradient edge not smooth
I’m creating 30 sec. spot which i composite video of people shot on black background. When my video levels are set ok, the edges look fine on my NTSC monitor. When I bring up the brightness a tad (just to check general tolerance), the edges don’t look smooth from picture to black.. it has levels like a “rainbow” of brightness levels with sharp edges… really stands out mostly during the dissolves.
I’m using 4 point garbage matte to soften the edges and then putting two shots on the same screen. Now i’d like to believe the engineers will adjust the playback correctly when showing but still seems like i’m not doing everything to make create the soft edge.On a related item, any suggestions on article/post that explains the black/ setup levels between FCP and analog. I’ve coming from and mastering to beta. Still not real comforable about it. I’m really pushing the black levels in this program and am a bit wary about being broadcast safe.

is your sequence set for 10-bit?
It has to be at least 10-bits to have a smooth gradient.

No, my sequence is set to DV/DVCPRO – NTSC. I’m using FCP 4 HD version. I’m loading from beta, converting the signal to DV, the firewire to my computer……. I see the drawdown menu for SEQUENCE SETTINGS and see 10 bit but it’s uncompressed….. mine is not….. so if i understand properly, the only way to get “smooth” is editing uncompressed or HD ?…. makes sense……..thanks..mk

The minimum bits to do a smooth gradient is 10.
10-bit uncompressed is the only set that will keep it all smooth.
Not on any HD though.
HDCAM and DVCPROHD are 8-bit HD formats.
D5 and HDCAM-SR are 10-bit HD Formats.
