Hi guys. right, i have a movie which has a yellow to purple gradient in the background. i need to compress this as a quicktime using something like sorenson 3. when i compress it the gradient obviously becomes a little crappy looking, with some banding. was wondering if anyone knew of a better codec to use or some settings in sorenson 3 that i could change.

    cheers

Generally you’re SOL. However you can add noise or use any dithering plug-ins you may have to reduce the effect.

If you notice watching DirecTV or digital cable anytime you see the art card at the end of a spot there is commonly a subtle gradient. It always looks terrible and banded. It’s just the limitations of the medium and that’s mpeg2. Furthermore compression algorithms usually work to group colors together to make them easier to describe making banding worse.

I’d throw a little layer of noise in there first and see if that gets you close enough.
