I’m working in HD with a flame artist.
We are getting banding on gradients in the flame and in AE.
I know 16bit will help but even in 16bit I see banding on 16bit PSDs and gradients created with Ramp effect.
How can I minimize banding in AE and also for output to the Flame, as the flame is going to do the layoff to a HD deck?

    Thanks

i already had this problem, and the solution is to add some noise to the ramp/gradient. I didn’t want to do it, but after some searches, it’s really the better way … just add a little imperceptible noise, it’s enough to eliminate banding.

You might try adding a small directional blur in the direction of your gradient, this will act as an antialising effect. Sometimes our Flame would also have banding but we were using a D-Beta master. I assumed it was some type of RGB-YUV problem because the Quantel Editbox looked fine which was a native YUV application.
