  • Grabbing stills…any easy method?

Posted by Adam Taylor on February 7, 2008 at 11:22 am

I need to grab lots of still frames from throughout a rushes tape. Its all digitized into FCP and i had forgotten what a pain grabbing stills actually is….

does anyone know of a quick and easy (preferably 1 or 2 keystrokes) that will allow me to rapidly progress through the material and grab a single frame whenever i see a suitable one?

The method i use currently is to mark in/out, export quicktime conversion, select still image, enter…all of which needs to be done with mouse/pen….and its taking forever!!!

    please help !

You don’t need to mark any in or out for stills. FCP always exports the still where the playhead is parked.

You can also use Apple’s Screen Grab utility if these stills are just for someone to view on a computer. Shift/Apple/4 they draw around the video image.

thanks Walter – no i/o? well whaddaya know!

The apple screen grab is no use for this job – not enough screen real estate to grab in the resolution i need.

ps. your color dvd finally arrived yesterday, Walter. Very useful….now if only i can convince the powers that be to get me a Tangent panel or an Eclipse !!!

completely unnecessary in my work. I have found better uses for $5,000 – $20,000 in my shop. 🙂

Quicktime Pro has export options in its dictionary for Applescript. Here’s an example of a script that exports from Quicktime Pro.

Perhaps you could easily modify to export still of the current frame, then do this export work using Quicktime Pro

    Hey Adam,

When I’ve had to export lots of stills I make a bin, make freeze frames (Shift-N) and drag them into the bin. Then I batch export as whatever file type I need and use Automator to rename them. The only slow-ish part is dragging the freeze frame.

    Hope that helps,
    Zak

    thanks guys…

steven – i couldn’t open the link – says server not responding!…but then i don’t have the time to learn scripting at the moment>

zak – great idea…i’ll remember that for next time. I just finished the job two minutes before your post popped up!!

    regards

Zak, that’s the method I’ve been using recently. I’m not a MacHead though, could you please outline the ‘automator’ steps for renaming?

    Thanks a lot

I know it’s, like, two years after this thread got started, but this problem has always plagued me and it’s the first hit on google… AND I’ve found a great solution via apple’s pro tips:
    https://www.apple.com/pro/tips/screenshots.html

I generally edit with my second monitor set to preview and therefore have a full version of the screen up at all times. Now, I click Apple+Shift+4 to bring up the crosshairs, *important* then press [SPACEBAR] and the crosshairs turn into a little camera icon. Simply click on the full-screen image, and the screengrab automatically pops up on your desktop.

Hope this helps someone else too!
