  • GPU in cubix xpander – must be Mac versions?

Posted by Toby Tomkins on September 6, 2011 at 9:54 am

    Hi all,

Can someone clarify if the GPU’s used in a Cubix Xpander need to be the Mac (EFI) versions of the cards when used with a Mac Pro? I assume so but I’m open to the idea of injectors or strings (I currently use a Hackintosh) but am moving to a Mac Pro.

    Thanks!

If used with a Mac-Pro they would have to be Mac cards as the Cubix is just a extender and the cards appear to the Mac as is they were in the Mac.

That’s a real shame. So the best GPU card is still the GTX 285?

I’m running a GTX 480 on a hackintosh for GUI and now we’re getting a Cubix for the MacPro to be officially supported by BMD I’m sad we have to put outdated hardware (2-3x 285’s) in there as opposed to affordable and great performance 480’s. 3x 480’s would fly.

Are there flashed 480 series cards for mac? (or other Cuda cards with 400+ cores?)

    I just found this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nvidia-GeForce-GTX-480-Apple-Mac-Pro-FERMI-CUDA-/330599952569?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item4cf94af0b9

Would that work in a Cubix with Resolve? It looks like it would!

Yes, flashed 470s for 350 per piece and 180% speed of the GTX 285.

That’s a 480 though. Any reason to go for the 470 over 480?

Has anyone used these new flashed 480’s ?

I too am curious on the 480’s as oppose to 470’s.

100 bucks more, much more noise, only 10% more speed.
    Not worth it imho.

Do you need a beefier power supply if shoving a 470 into mac pro and not the cubix? I know you do for the 480.

just clarify, if i run a cubix on a real mac not a hackintosh, flashed 470’s work perfectly? that’s so awesome. I’m totally doing that…
