I am wanting to upgrade my graphics on my Mac Pro. It currently only has a Nvidia GT120. I can either go with an ATI 4780HD or a Nvidia GTX 285. I know the Nvidia one is the better overall card. My question is whether the Nvidia one will help with video production a lot more then the ATI one?

Premiere Pro doesn’t really utilize the GPU…other than about three effects and three transitions. (I am hopeful for the future)

The GPU will benefit After Effects previews and Photoshop feedback.

In each of those cases, the cards you are referring to are really consumer level cards. You’ll see some benefits in the apps I mentioned, but it won’t be like putting a Quadro card in it.

    Guys…

    just an aside

    Take a look at:

    https://www dot fxguide dot com

there is an IBC video podcast wrap up there.

part of it is on a “technology preview” of Adobe and GPU at the Nvidia booth there.

    Very interesting.

    Oh. My. Goodness.

That IBC demo is mind blowing. Real-time preview of 4k RED footage straight from the timeline with RGB curves applied and a bunch of other effects, without spending 6 figures on hardware.

I’ve just sent Adobe a “feature request” urging them to incorporate GPU-accelerated grading features into PPro ASAP

We’re definitely excited, but I will reiterate that this is a technology preview. 😉
