  • GPU Choice for “Field Laptop” New nvidia K3000m gtx680m or AMD 7970m and standard candle v9 test…

Posted by Christopher Adams on November 4, 2012 at 11:31 pm

I have been searching for days now and running tests on a few GPU’s but i need to know if anyone has run the standard v9 candle test on a single mobile Quadro k3000m (kepler) card?

I am trying to choose between these three cards:

    Nvidia GTX680m 3GB GDDR5
    Nvidia Quadro K3000m (kepler NEW) 2GB GDDR5
    AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB GDDR5

NOTE: that I am also using Maya 2013 on this box so need to think about the bad Open GL performance that the 6xx consumer cards have in maya. (i hear it sucks and is totally hobbled)

I just wanted to see how much i would miss the 680 in resolve and cs6 and if I go with what maya likes.
It wants the Quadro’s of course.

AMD is out of the question as it doesn’t work on PC resolve.

I’d check out the Resolve config guide. Don’t think they mention any laptops that would work on PC. Only laptop mentioned is MacBook Pro, which I’d recommend the Retina with a 1GB video ram.

As to the preference between 680M and K3000m… the 680 will almost certainly run rings around the K3000m in resolve. Of course the reverse is true for Maya. So pick which one matters to you more and then try it out.

There are no guarantees here. None of this configs are listed in the config guide. And I’ve never known anyone to successfully use them. But please let us know how it works out CJ!

One thing i found in my testing the last few days was that the gtx 670m 3gb ram was pretty much equivalent to the Quadro 4000 in my mac pro 2010
    I ran tests for
    – resolve both (candle test and processing BMCC footage)

    – maya2013 Example scene with lots of users feedback with specs to judge.

    – lightwave3d from Newtek’s included demo scenes which was a pretty heavy setup.

    – After Effects cs6,
Other then the candle test these were tests that others were using with the same example scenes for all platforms.

    Hardware:
2010 Mac pro 2.4 Dual quadcore
    24gig ram
    ati radeon 5770 gui
    quadro 4000 2gb

    Asus G75VW-
    Processor: Intel i7 – 3610QM 2.3 GHz. (QuadCore)
    16gig ram
    Nvidia 670M 3gb ram

I Also did a mac pro config where i was attached to the quadro 4000 as the GUI

    Results below:
