    After Effects and Premiere Pro are looking for their Quicktime functions where they always have: somewhere in your system32 folder (within whatever your XP folder is called; mine is called WINNT)

    Apple has said “To allow for compatability with applications which rely on the presence of QuickTime in the old “\Windows\System32\QuickTime” directory, QuickTime 7 will install a DLL file for purposes of backward compatibility named QuickTime.qts to this same directory. This file will do the work of finding the new QuickTime file locations forapplications that explicitly look in the old location…”

    I used this info for a fix that seems to work, and (except for the regedit part) it’s probably harmless.

    I dunno how much of this you have to do, and I’m not gonna re-do it to find out, but here’s a fix to restore .mov compatibility to your Adobe programs.

    I uninstalled QT7 and used regedit to (laboriously) remove every reference to quicktime in my Windows registry (NOTE: messing with the registry is VERY HAZARDOUS!)

    There are also 2 files (adjacent in your file manager) in the system32 directory (“Quicktime.qts” and another one, something like “Quicktime.ref”) that have to go.

    The rest is simple:

    Reboot, reinstall QT6.5, and chances are it will want to install (in the install dialog) to “Program Files\Quicktime”. Go ahead and do so. Then ALSO install it to “WINNT\system32\quicktime” – again, if your system files directory is named something else, use your name instead of WINNT.

    Voila (probably). Just for the heck of it, I also copied all the files in the system32/quicktime folder into system32 (outside the quicktime folder) – lookiung at the Apple statement, I probably didn’t have to, and I may delete them and see if I still have the restored function in my Adobe programs.

    If you don’t still have a copy of QT6.5, email me at wa***@*******ic.com and I’ll put it (temporarily) on my website and tell you where to find it.

    Just pro forma, I hereby disclaim any responsibility for you messing up your system – but, heck, that’s what “System Restore” is for, I suppose (fat lotta good it did me in solving this).

    =============

    There is no “way to peace.” Peace is the way.

    You might not want to hear this but I found a much better simpler fix for problems with AfterEffects and Quicktime 7.x Someone else reported this fix on one of the Adobe User forums. Update your video card to the latest driver!!! No uninstall/reinstall of AE or Quicktime. I (and others) originally created this problem when updating iTunes (which updates Quicktime and nullifies Quicktime Pro).
