  • Gopro v Sony Importing problem to do with fps I think?

    Hi
I have set my easy set up to Apple Intermediate Codec, 1080i and it captures the HDV footage from my 1080i Sony V1E now. But now it is only letting me import 3 of 5 video settings from my gopro. It lets me import all the 25fps options:

    r2 16:9 HD Video 720p (1280×720) PAL 25fps
    r4 4:3 Tallest HD Video 960p (1280×960) PAL 25fps
    r5 16:9 Full HD 1080p (1920×1080) PAL 25fps

but when I try and import any video from these two settings it says:

    r1 16:9 wide angle SD WVGA (848×480) PAL 50fps
    r3 16:9 widest HD video 720p 1280×960) PAL 50fps

    Error, 1 file(s) recognised, 0 access denies, 1 unknown…and doesn’t let me import it

    What am I doing wrong?

GoPro video is h.264 which is difficult for FCP to edit as it is an end user format. Use Compressor to convert the clips to Pro Res and then edit with those.

You can also use MPEG Streamclip or QuickTime Player 7. Though Compressor is nicest because you can quickly set up a droplet or a watch folder to do the work.

    Hi Noah

So lets say I am using the setting r5 on my gopro which is the 16:9 Full HD (1920×1080) 1080p 25fps when I drop it into Mpeg Streamclip (or compressor) do I choose:

    Apple Prores 422
    Apple prores 422 (HQ)
    Apple prores proxy
    Apple prores (LT)

and do I choose whichever resolution matches the original footage, so in this case 1920×1080 (unscaled)

then when it is done and it is imported into FCP, I also have my V1E footage which is in 1440×1080 at 25fps, so what do I do now, do I convert my V1E footage to the apple prores as well (and which one) and what do I select the resolution at for the V1E stuff because there is no choice for 1440×1080 so do I still pick 1920×1080??

Thanks Noah, really appreciate your help

actually the gopro footage is at 29fps, does this make a difference as well and if so what should I do about that?

I’d suggest 29.97/1920×1080- ProRes (just that- not HQ or Proxy).
