    Hi

I’ve tried to find a definitive answer on this to no avail.

What copyright restrictions are there on using Google Earth Imagery for UK television broadcasts?

On their website they mention their fair use policy for single broadcasts so long as you attribute them but it doesn’t categorically state that the images are free to use.

Does anyone have experience of using Google Earth for UK terrestrial broadcasts? Specifically the BBC?

Also, does anyone have any tips for work-flow? I.E. exporting movies from Google Earth to FCP?

    Any help much appreciated.

    Thanks

You have to pay for the Broadcasting rights. You need to contact Google directly for the appropriate rates for your use as it varies based on a number of factors. Companies like CNN pay a blanket yearly fee to use the google maps. It’s possible the BBC already pays a blanket rate that could apply to your show.

I did a 5 part series that appeared on PBS stations two years ago and I think we paid somewhere around $1,000 for the rights to use the maps in portions of those 5 shows.

    Hi

it’s really not clear because in the following link where google outline their permissions they state: “In many cases, as long as you’re not violating Google’s terms of service, the concept of ‘fair use’ applies”

    “Broadcast use
Please retain copyright attribution as illustrated in the examples above if you’re using Google Maps or Google Earth for one time use in a TV program. If you intend to use Google Maps or Google Earth in a film or broadcast on TV for an unlimited number of times over a period of one year or more, you must obtain special approval from us. If you want to produce movies, please subscribe to Google Earth Pro which allows you to record movies directly from your client.”

It seems as though if it’s a simple one-time use and you attribute them then you don’t have to pay…is that correct?

Also, how do i contact Google? – Email takes too long for a response and their UK office is just for press queries and there’s never any answer…any ideas?

    cheers

Note the telephone number when you scroll down.

BTW, I found this by “google.com” into my web browser, then clicking the “About Google” button just below the search field, then the “Contact Us” button under the “More Google” banner.

It’s in the support pages when you download Google Earth Pro. You can download a demo version. There are names and phone numbers to contact.
