  • Good shotgun/hyper cardiod mic for video

I’ve been using the Rode Video Mic on my HMC150 as an onboard shotgun, as well as putting it on a mic stand for interviews (out of frame). It’s served me fairly well, but I’d like to upgrade to an xlr and a bit higher quality with a separate shock mount (the video mic is 1/4 inch mini and has a built in shock mount which you have to use and is not very good).

Would anyone care to recommend a mic in the 200-300 range?
I’m hoping to use it for the following:
    • On a mic stand, just out of frame, above 1 or 2 subjects’ head for video interviews
    • On board the camera for run and gun (last resort, but sometimes necessary)

First, would people recommend a hybercardiod over a shotgun (supercardiod)?
I heard that the Oktava MK 012 is a good hypercardiod for the money.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

The Oktava 012 has notorious LF handling issues. Not a mic for run & gun although if it’s mounted in a good shock mount on a good boom pole on a solid stand it could work fairly well. You’ll need a mixer with a LF or high pass filter to eliminate any thumps & bumps it will pick up. If you find a used AKG Blueline set with the hyper capsule & the shotgun capsule you’ll be better served. Check out ebay for AKG Blueline.
