  • Good screen size and resolution for editing? (laptop)

I’m going to buy a laptop since I’m travelling around a lot and I need good laptop so I can do all the editing with it (AE/PS/HD video editing/etc).

I was looking Sony’s AW series and they have 18,4″ model with 1920×1080 resolution. They also have that same model with 1680×945 resolution. Do you think 1920×1080 is too much in 18,4″ screen? Is it going to be hard to work when everything is that small? I think I would prefer 1680x, but then that vertical resolution of 945 pixels could be a little better. But it’s only 79 pixels less than in my current screen so I think I can live with that.

    DPI’s in those models are:

    18,4″ & 1920×1080 = 104
    18,4″ & 1680×945 = 119

My current desktop screen is 17″ with 1280×1024 resolution and I like the size of things in this. DPI in this = 96. I think DPI could be slightly bigger than what I currently have, but not any smaller. I can’t see those laptops live anywhere, so I need to go with one that feels better. I think 119 DPI could be too small… What you think?

Here’s DPI calculator if you need it: https://www.raydreams.com/prog/dpi.aspx

I use a 17″ Dell M90 set at max res (1920×1200) all the time. An 18″ at 1920×1080 is probably a widescreen display and the pixels would be slightly larger than what I’m used to…

I haven’t seen a laptop yet that has resolution that is beyond what I can see…though everyone’s eyesight is different of course.

I have pretty good eyesight and I don’t use glasses. Just thinking if it’s too small “for my taste”. I guess you can get used to bigger DPI with time.

Would a 15.6 inch screen be ok for after effects? With the resolution set to the right size? Concerned I don’t waste my money but a 17.3 inch screen with the right hardware will set me back another £200

Thanks for advice. On another issue I note AE requires 1280×900. I don’t think my laptop will support it. Can I not just use 1280×960 or 1368×768 or will it nit work?
