good screen for video work
Posted by Sascha Engel on April 10, 2009 at 6:05 amHi,
I am about to build myself a new editing studio, based on the new Nehalem Mac Pro.
Here my question: After hearing more and more not so good things about the Apple Cinema Screen, I wonder, what is another good monitor for video work and reasonibly trustable in colour grading. I have to say, that my budget is not more than approximately 1000$.
Thanx for suggestions.Sascha Engel

April 10, 2009 at 3:41 pmThe Dell screens are very good. I have several Samsung screens which I love. And they are about the same price as the Dells.
Have a wonderful day.

So you are talking NOT computer monitor, but production monitor for HD good for color grading? For $1000? Do you have a capture card to send the signal to this monitor?
You’d be hard pressed to find something at that price. A good Dell 2409 in combination with the MXO will work, but getting both will cost you $1600.

April 10, 2009 at 5:20 pmBasically I need two computer screens to work with – Dual Screen set up. And one of them should give me a realistic look on colours when I am onlining the project, yes.
I will have a BlackMagic Decklink Extreme Video Card, Mac Pro with Nehalem Processor, and a SD Monitor (a little older, but working well).
Thanx a lot for your help!Sascha Engel

April 10, 2009 at 5:49 pmHi Shane,
another question: The Dell 2409 is rather hard to get in Israel. Any other of the Dell Family in the same price class, that is equally good in quality?
Thanx a lot, your help is very appreciated.Greetz!

You want a COMPUTER MONITOR to do this? Well, most don’t. The new HP DREAMCOLOR claims to…they used these for KUNG FU PANDA. But they are more than $1000.
Computer monitors don’t receive a signal appropriate for this. They get an RGB signal and video is YUV. That is why the MXO is a great box, it extracts YUV from the DVI out and throws that up on the monitor. Without the MXO you’ll be hard pressed to use a computer monitor for color accurate monitoring.
And any Dell 24″ monitor should work. 2405, 2407, 2408… Needs to be 24″ for the full pixel to pixel display.

April 10, 2009 at 10:36 pmFor what it’s worth, if you need to see NTSC or PAL on a decent production monitor (not computer) the Sony 2030 Luma is great for the price. Around 1200 bucks, I have been using one for about 6 months and it’s worked out great. Tough to calibrate, but once you get it it’s just fine.
Have a wonderful day.

can I run a 2nd 2709w off the 470 card? or do I need a 2nd graphics card???
would the 2709 with the Matrox convertor also be a good montitor for color grading with final cut pro/color? HOw about without the Matrox for less critical web delivery stuff?
Bob Zelin also mentioned a Panasonic TH42PH11UK 42″ plasma in another thread…could this actually be the main single computer monitor AND color grading monitor…the screen real estate might be nice???
any suggestions for a single (at first) good mac monitor for fcp???
