Good RAID cabinet/enclosure for video editing (SD, DV50)
We are facing the fact that we need to review the way we are using video disks in editing.
For many years, we have been using bus-powered 2,5″ enclosure.
Up until now, things have worked fine. But now we’re facing problems.
Different enclosures, different disks. Either the enclosure fails, leaving the disk intact, or (worse!) the disk fails.
Heat, incompatibility, moon phase… not sure why.
So – are there GOOD enclosures/disks out there?
We have a few factors here:
1. FW800 interface is required.
2. RAID1, over two disks
3. Good cooling (quiet, too)We’re still shooting SD/DV50, so there’s no need for eSATA or RAID0 for speed.
(if anyone know the teoretical max number of DV50 streams over FW8000 and a RAID1 system, let me know).
When I ask around what disk brand is the best, I get various answers. But most of the folks tell me that Seagate is the one to go for.
I figure they need to be 7200rpm disks, and preferrably as cool as possible, since there’ll be two disks in a cabinet.
But how do I know I buy the “right” Seagate (or other) disk?
If you happen to know a brand of enclosure that sell to Europe, it’d be nice.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

I’ve had problems with external Seagate drives in the past. The drives themselves are fine, it’s the enclosures that would fail, though that was a few years ago now. I imagine things have improved.
My personal favourites are Glyph and G-Tech
DV50 is 50Mbps, so theoretically you can reach 16 DV50 streams with FireWire 800, although in practical terms you won’t get as many as that.

3. Good cooling (quiet, too)”G-tech makes the G-Safe for raid 1. It includes both drives (hitachi) and enclosure with internal raid card. There are many other such raid 1 devices by companies like Maxx Digital and CalDigit.
