An Avid editor just showed this tip using the Photoshop ruler
tool (you can find the ruler in the eyedropper icon).

If you have something at an angle that you need to straighten –
like a crooked scan, click on the ruler, and draw a line from one
corner of the element to the other – so that the line follows
    the angle.

    Then click on transform/rotate (edit>transform>rotate).

The numeric degree of the angle will show up on the transform menu.

If it’s a minus, replace the minus with a plus, and if it’s a plus, visa versa.

This wll instantly straighten your element.

Even faster – no need to enter anything – image – rotate canvas – but ritates teh whol ething. Transform rotates just one layer

That’s a great one, Jean! I’m always getting photographs in from clients who don’t know what a straight line is, and having to correct them. This will save my trying to eyeball them every time. Who says putting the digital camera in the hands of millions of untalented people is a good thing? Thanks.

That editor hit me for a lot of elements after divulging that tip, but it was worth it!

Actually, an even simpler way –
    1. use the measure tool to draw the line.
    2. select: image/rotate/arbitrary and hit enter – done!

OK, I feel really dumb, I can’t find the ruler tool or the measure tool. I have a brand new off the showroom floor model of Photoshop CS, we also have versioin 7. Can’t find it in either.

    Hi Charilie –
In PS 7, it’s located in the eyedropper tool. Just click on that little arrow down at the right hand corner of the eyedrop tool, and you’ll see the measure tool.

That’s where we were looking, Frank or I neither can find it. There is a long list of tools in the drop down menu, but not the ones mentioned. What category of tools would they be listed under? Are we missing something?

Never Mind, I opened another file and voila there it is. Have no idea whatsoever how it suddenly appeared. Hope I don’t lose it again.
