  • Good offline codec for LOADS of B-Roll

Posted by Uli Kunkel on April 17, 2007 at 11:31 pm

I am trying to figure out the best way of managing a substantial amount of B-Roll for my church. They do a lot of video projects, all of which are output to DVCAM at Uncompressed 8-bit NTSC video.

    1) Is there an offline codec that has a lower bitrate than DV and that is at a standard 720×480 resolution for editing?

    2) Is there a good way of cataloguing and accessing this B-Roll in a way that makes it easy to import into a project for editing while maintaining the metadata (loggin info)?

    Thank you for your help.

I make use of the PhotoJPEG codec at anywhere from 10-50% quality for offline. In addition, if physical frame size is not an issue, I’ll use OfflineRT as well. In both cases, I’ve edited projects with over 90 hours of material.

Off-line RT is your answer. We use it day in and day out for ALL of our editing. We do the classic “Off-line” to “On line” workflow. If you choose to go down this route, be sure to be extremely careful about reel numbers and naming conventions since you will have to find and redigitize everything when it comes time to do a final output.

    Good luck.

Will the Offline RT give me 640×480 resolution? That’s kind of an issue for me, but whatever graphics are created, need to be created at native resolution since you don’t up-res them. Also, editing anything 320×240 is a big pain.

    What do you think?

There is NO free lunch here.

You either accept the degraded quality and smaller frame size in favor of lower bandwidth and storage or you don’t. That’s why most people DON’T bother with off-line anymore.

If it’s too much of a “pain”, don’t use it. Pony up for enough storage so this isn’t an issue for you.

PhotoJPEG will give you full size, OfflineRT will not. Try different presets using the Quality slider within the PhotoJPEG capture settings and see what works best for you in terms of storage vs. image quality. The files sizes can be really tiny, but still look pretty good.

    Enjoy.

This doesn’t address your main Q, but if you are outputting to DVCAM there’s no need to work in an uncompressed sequence as it all just gets smashed down by the DV compression in the end.
