Good format to export ProRes to in CS5.5
Posted by Chris Jordan on June 8, 2011 at 2:58 pmHey all, I will be shooting in ProRes and have cs5.5 I dont want to waste too much of your time, on something that has been asked a million times, but I really haven’t found the answer directly. So here is my question:
Should I A: keep working in cs5.5 PP and if so what should I export my pro res files to?
Should I B: Buy FCP or FCX (when it arrives) and deal with cs5.5 suite minus PP….Thanks for your help. I have been coming here for years, just finally registered.

June 8, 2011 at 3:35 pmHi CJ,
Premiere Pro CS5.5 will edit ProRes natively – is that what you are asking? When you said export, maybe you meant transcode?
Just work with the ProRes clips as is, no conversion necessary

June 8, 2011 at 3:44 pmYes I mean Export, (CMD+M) as in when I want to send it out of PP after I am finished with the project. thanks for the help! I guess what is the a good codec to use?

June 8, 2011 at 3:57 pmThere are a lot of codecs to choose from, but it really depends on your needs. Do you just need to “archive” a copy of the edited video? Do you need to send it to another studio for further editing?
Please let us know more about your workflow and intentions
Thanks

June 8, 2011 at 4:30 pmsome will be for broadcast, some will be for big screen, some will be for youtube and vimeo, some will be for DVD… I guess I just want the cleanest ,least compressed format possible, while being able to fit where I send it.

June 8, 2011 at 9:31 pmALSO I just tried to load the footage in PP5.5, via xdcam422 settings for the sequence. and it says file corrupted. it was captured with the atomos ninja. what am I missing?

June 9, 2011 at 2:29 pmHow are you importing the clips into Premiere? Rather than use “”File > Import”, I would use the “Media Browser” which is a small window at lower left of Premiere interface, should be tabbed next to “Effects” bin. This works better for file-based workflows.

June 9, 2011 at 2:33 pmGents, Thanks to all for your kind and quick responses. I was recording through the ninja at 4 channels of audio, and CS5.5 only recognizes 2 channel. So I flipped that back to 2 and it imports fine now 🙂
So now the only real question I have would be : Is there a significant difference with working with pro res in FCP over PP ? Thanks again, and i’d love to show you footage once shot.
