Hey Guys been doing videos for 2 years now and working on Sony Vegas and loving it finally have a big budget coming in and I been doing all my work on a MAcbook Pro 13 in 2.4 Ghz 16gm Ram dual processor(really 1 core because I ran parallels windows so I could run Vegas) don’t ask me how I did it but I made it happen. I’m ask for some advice on what specs I need for a computer to run smoothly in video productions for mainly music videos and short films. Please let me know what would suite me best from a PC and MAC point of view I have a 1,000 – 5,000 dollar budget on a computer..

    Check out this link https://www.videoguys.com/Guide/C/DIY+Systems/Videoguys+DIY9+Sneak+Peek+Its+Time+for+Sandy+Bridge+E/0xe9b142f408a2b03ab88144a434e88de7.aspx

I have not built this computer but it looks like it’s pretty solid. Others here have recommended it.

SSD’s have come down in price, and I wouldn’t get one that big anyway. I have two 64 GB SSD, striped (raid 0) for my home system. Really fast.

I would recommend two drives in raid 0 on your data drive too, using either 1 or 2 TB drives. The speed increases.

Don’t skimp on the power supply and get a good aftermarket CPU cooler. I use liquid at home and at work.

RAM has come down too, so at least 24 GB.

I prefer EVGA and ASUS mother boards.

    Have fun,

    Jeff

I have and it ROCKS! 6 cores, 12 threads, 16GB of quad channel memory, SSD C: drive, Quadro 4000 GPU and the system is scary fast.

On the Mac side the new MacBook Pro 15″ with Retina Display is awesome. The resolution is so high that you can use full 1080 in the preview. Unfortunately the Mac Pro’s are a bit old and a refresh isn’t due until next year so it’s not a good time for a power user to buy a Mac right now which is why I build the DIY9 to hold me over.

I will look into this more than John, but do these computers work well with 4k Resolution such as REDCAM ??
Also would would you recommend PC or MAC Laptop wise? I am a very mobile person I would like to have the DIY9 at home and something powerful on the road or would you say bring the DIY9 with me… If so still give me some advice for a good power laptop unless you think the Retina Macs are the best..

    THANKS JOHN AND JEFF

[ToNY D. [cbmg]] “do these computers work well with 4k Resolution such as REDCAM ??”

I haven’t worked with 4K so I have no idea how powerful a computer you need for that. You’ll have to ask the folks at RED what they recommend.

As for PC vs Mac, unless you have a need to run Mac programs or interact with Mac editors, you can probably get away with a PC for both desktop and laptop. However, if you plan to work with editors or post houses that require you to generate ProRes 422, you’ll need a Mac unless you want to use questionable open source solutions. Since a Mac can run Windows but a PC cannot run OS X (legally) a Mac can be more versatile. I’m sure you can find a powerful PC laptop but I don’t have a recommendation as I do all of my video editing on my desktop workstation.
