Good chromakeyer?
Posted by Ryan Chandler on November 22, 2010 at 6:29 pmWhat’s a good chromakeyer to use with Premiere? I don’t always control the footage I get and sometimes it’s not all that good and I was wondering if anyone out there has any recommendations on a good keyer investment?

November 22, 2010 at 8:54 pmWell…if you’re using CS5, you already have one built in – Ultra Key. We were big Ultra fans back when it was created by a little company known as Serious Magic, which was swallowed whole by Adobe, including their level of support.
But I digress…
I”m assuming that you have ruled out the built-in chroma key effect in Premiere – probably a good idea.
If you also have After Effects, you again have a venerable keyer already there – Keylight.
Boris FX makes their Chroma Key Unit which is a plugin for Premiere.

November 22, 2010 at 10:16 pmPremiere really isn’t designed for keying. Most keys make heavy use of masking, which really isn’t easy to achieve in Premiere either, so I would highly recommend After Effects, and with that, my personal favorite, Red Giant Primatte.

November 22, 2010 at 10:53 pmIt really depends upon which version of Premiere you have, as well as your access to After Effects. If you have AE, forget Premiere for keying.
We picked up a copy of Primatte at NAB a couple of years ago, and I really like it. Very powerful, yet really easy to use – typical of Red Giant’s stuff. Still, I learned keying with Keylight, so I seem to feel more comfortable with it.

November 23, 2010 at 10:59 pmThanks guys,
I’ll take a look at these. I was hoping to keep it right on the timeline for the amount of work but it’s not the end of the world if I have to take it out to another app
