  • Going from prores to AVCHD

I’ve been editing a RED project on FCP using Prores422(HQ) and now, for reasons best known only to himself, the client would like the delivery format to be .mts (the format of Panasonic AVCHD to be precise). I have already produced the masterclip in Prores and would idealy like to just transcode this file.
I do have a couple of tricks for converting AVCHD into Prores but none of them work in reverse.

    Anybody have any ideas?

Tell him this is not an option. Tell him to deliver on Blu Ray.

AVCHD is very similar to H264, so you could probably supply on that without problems.

I’m fascinated – why would anyone want to go to AVCHD? It’s an aquisition format, and a particularly irritating one. Please can you let us know his reason?

    Those are proprietary formats.
You’ll need some third part software and the correct specs of what you want to get.
There are hundreds of AVCHD flavor and in the case of the PANA AVCHD are developed for acquisition.
No much sense to make a software to export to an acquisition format.

[Gaz Evans] “I’ve been editing a RED project on FCP using Prores422(HQ) and now, for reasons best known only to himself, the client would like the delivery format to be .mts (the format of Panasonic AVCHD to be precise).”

I think it’s best to find out the reason why. If he needs an AVCHD-like MTS file (MPEG transport stream with H.264 video and PCM audio, which would be reasonable for some specific playback devices), you can deliver this with Telestream Episode Pro — just make sure you know the maximum bit rate.

If he really needs Panasonic AVCHD, I second Jeremy’s suggestion — just play it out to an AVCHD recorder.
