    Hello ALl,

I am relatively new to Avid (been using FCP for years), so I’m not sure what the best way to do this is…

I’m trying to take video/audio I capture with Avid Express on Computer One, and move it to Computer Two, then open it with Avid Free DV. Computer Two only has Avid Free DV on it, but I capture video on Computer One, which has Avid Express. I work in a News Station, and Computer One is hooked to Master Control, while my machine (Computer Two), is on the other end of the building and only connected to Computer One via local ethernet.

Currently I am exporting an Uncompress AVI file from Avid Express, copying it over the network to my machine, then importing it to Avid Free DV. This is very time consuming and not very productive. I’m sure there is a better way, but I don’t know enough about Avid to figure out what that is.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks!
    Nate

Actually, what you’re doing is about as good as it gets.

Avid FreeDV doesn’t talk to any other version of Avid. You can’t share projects between FreeDV and Xpress Pro, and you can’t share their media. Exporting a self-contained quicktime or .avi then reimporting is your best bet. You might have faster import times if you export in an Avid codec, but I’m not sure. Avid FreeDV may not have fast imports–gives you incentive to buy Xpress Pro.

If your Master Control system won’t be using Xpress Pro when you’re using it you can install Xpress Pro on your system, transfer the media and project file, then borrow the dongle. Plug it in, open Avid, edit, take it back to Master Control when they need it. Otherwise, you’ll have to keep exporting and importing.

    Michael.

    Well that is a bummer!

    Okay, here’s another queestion:

I have a copy of Avid Express Pro sitting in front of me, but this copy is currently installed on another machine on our network. If I install it on my machine, will it cause conflict with the other machine? If it causes conflict, is it only while we are both trying to run Avid?

Also, is there a physical dongle that I would need to borrow to run this software? I’m familar with the concept of a dongle, but I wasn’t aware that machines running Avid had one installed/physically connected to it. It sounds like this is the case, correct?

    Thanks!

Avid has a physical USB dongle that holds all the license information and blesses your system to run. You can install your Xpress Pro software on 10,000 PCs and Macs, but only the system with the dongle attached will run Avid.

Installing multiple copies of Avid on several computers on a network won’t mess anything up. You’ll just need to take the dongle to the machine you want to use, plug it in, open Avid, edit!

Ah, okay this all makes sense now! Thank you for all your help! I’m off to find a dongle!

Can anyone direct me to a copy of Avid Free DV for Mac?

I’m trying to brush up on Avid (I’ve been off it for years using FCP) and can’t afford to buy a copy for practice. I just want to refresh my memory and play around with the interface between jobs. No heavy lifting.

I know there is a free 30 day trial of Media Composer out right now. Unfortunately, my computer does not meet the minimum system requirements–it is not running OS 10.6.3. I do, however, have an older machine, running OS 10.3.9, that could handle Avid Free DV.

Can anyone direct me to an archive of the Avid Free DV software for Mac?

For the record, I have located a copy of Avid Free DV version 1.6.1 for Windows at:

    https://en.kioskea.net/download/download-1992-avid-free-dv

Here is a list of the Avid Free DV system requirements:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20070221065207/https://www.avid.com/freedv/sysReq...

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
