  • Going back and forth from office to home…need advice.

I need some advice on setting up an effective and efficient work flow between the office and home. At the office, I cut episodic documentaries on a PC-based Media Composer. However, I have just arranged to do the majority of my work from home, which will be a MAC-based Xpress Pro. Does the following make sense:

    1. Assistant editor does string out on MC at office.
    2. I bring all the B-Roll and stock footage I need into project.
    3. Export only the media relevant to that project as lower-res QTs/Reference Movies onto an external drive.
    4. Bring the drive home and transfer it to the RAID at home.
    5. Cut, cut, cut…
    6. Bring only the sequences as well as any QTs of graphics work from After Effects, etc., back to the office for finishing work.

Does that make sense? Will I be able to use the reference movies just as they are or will I need to export ALE files and run them through a program like Sebsky Tools to make sure TC is maintained? Is there something I’m not accounting for here? Is there a better way? I can’t house the “true” media at home or capture from tapes…I need a system where I am working with reference media that will allow me to merely take sequences back and forth and have them flawlessly reconnect with the original media on the Unity at work.

If there is any info missing that you would need to help me answer this question, I’d be happy to offer it up.

    Thanks.

nowadays you can throw yer media and yer project on a firewire drive and bring it home.
Copy the media into your omfi folder and put your project where ya want and you are good to go. Great for offlining. I do it with dv25 stuff all the time. I dont try to edit to or from that drive, it’s just a media-toter.

But what would be the best way to consolidate all of the media I need to be able to transfer it onto that FW drive? I work on a series that is shared by other editors, along with quite a lot of footage that is shared, so bits and pieces of the media are in so many different places on the Unity. I figured exporting from the project itself to brand new reference clips would help ease the workload, even though it requires the extra step of exporting and waiting for that process to complete. Is there an effective way to consolidate all of the media that I am using in a project (not just what’s in the sequence, but all of my general B-roll bins and stock footage)?

    Thanks.

Open the bins with all the media you want to take home consolidate the masterclips to your external drive. It will copy the masterclips to your drive and leave the originals on your Unity. If you consolidate a sequence it will copy just the portions you used–consolidate the masterclip and it will copy the entire clip.

Precomputes don’t consolidate, though, so you’ll want to get the originals of anything you import (say a graphic with an alpha) because you’ll need to batch import them.

    Michael.
