What’s a good way to add a glow to a stroked path without affecting the rest of the layer that the stroke is on? I tried using Trapcode’s 3dstroke, but that doesn’t give me a good way to make it glow.

Would it be best to just do the effect on a solid in its own comp, render the stuff, and then composite it in?

Why not just render the stroke on it’s own layer and apply the glow to that layer?

Because the stroke needs to go onto a layer that’s getting shattered. What I’m doing is animating the end point of a stroked circle to match a rotating particle emitter so it looks like a hole is being cut into the layer from behind, and then blowing the whole thing up with shatter.

I guess that I could just move layers into a new comp, generate the stroke on its own layer like you said, add the glow, and then place that comp into the main comp and shatter it there. Does that sound like the best option?

i would assume so, shatter is going to take what ever you have in 2d and shatter it, no matter what as long as it’s on teh same layer, and what not you’ll be fine( ie pre compose the stroked circle, put it on the comp pre compose and shatter that precomp)

just make sre you have some sort of mask over your circle set for the shatter area, as to only satter the inside of the region not the outside, though im sure your ten steps ahead of me there.
