  • Glitch frames while transferring from Betacam SP to digital

    Hello all,

I’ m wondering if there is anyone who can help me. We are transferring footage from Betacam SP (480i29.97) to digital format – eventually going through a Teranex to upscale to 720p59.94. The upscaling has been amazing.

My uissue is that some of the Betacam tapes and our Betacam SP players are over 20 years old. We have had the deck serviced, but we still get glitches from the frames not being read correctly. It can be a line about 50 lines wide that glitches, or color degradation, or a whole frame, but usually it is only one frame at a time, so I can manually, after upscaling to 720p59.94, copy the frame before and use that as a “bandaid”. The problem is, on some of the recordings, there are a LOT of clitches, therefore I have to go through the whole video – sometimes a 2+ hour video, and try to catch every single glitch and then use the “bandaid” method I described.

So, is there any program that can analyse the footage to find such glitchs? If it could fix the frame also, that would be awesome, but I don’t mind manually fixing them. It’s the finding them that is the most mentaly demanding…

If you need to know, my work flow is:

1: Play out of Betacam SP deck component out to an AJA KONA card in a Mac to a 480i29.97 Apple PRoRes 422 HQ format. This is where the glitches show up.

2: Play out of the Mac through a Teranex AV upscaling to 720p59.94 AVI into a Windows 10 machine. Convert to ProRes 422 HQ to save space.

    3. Edit in Adobe Premiere Pro. Here’s where I playback the videos looking for any glitches and “bandaid” them.

** We are using two different facilities in two different parts of the country, so we can’t go directly from the Betacam SP Deck through the Teranex into the Mac to make it one process…

Any help would be much appreciated!

    TIA

Sounds like good old Betacam dropouts, not much you can do as the tape has been damaged at that point, make sure the VTR and Computer have reference going to them so they will lock to each other can sometimes make the dropouts appear less gruesome.
