glance in text
Posted by Franca on August 20, 2007 at 11:37 amI already searched the forum but couldn’t quite find what I need!
I want to show i.e. a word and this word should have a glance/shining coming from the left and going to the right.. I don’t know to explain it but I have seen it a lot in movies etc. (I don’t know the exact english explanation – which makes it hard to search for!)
Anybody who knows what I mean and how to do this?

August 20, 2007 at 12:48 pmI would applied maybe some glow to it and use Trapcode’s Shine Plugin found here.
But if you don’t wanna use plug-ins, light sweep might work, or maybe some projected blur like in the volumetric lighting tutorial, but use text instead of fractal noise and point the blur out, not in, and maybe using a light animate from one side to the other. Maybe I’ll make a tutorial on it and post it on my forum which you can find in my sig.

August 20, 2007 at 1:02 pmIt’s under effect>generate in AE7, effect>render in AE 6.5. If you have the educational version, you probably don’t have it.
If that’s the case, you could create a ramp (gradient) on a solid over the text layer, then set its transfer mode to “add” or “screen”. Then you could animate its position across the text.

August 20, 2007 at 1:26 pmargh! *sorry* I am just little bit frustrated because of my own foolishness… I don’t get it..
I did the following:
I created a text layer – wrote something – then created a solid layer (white) and used the effect generate>gradient and then tried to “add” it by giving it the transfer mode “add” — but then EVERYTHING is filled with gradient and not only my text… I am sure I act like one was born yesterday, but…argh! 🙂the frustrated franca

August 20, 2007 at 1:55 pmSorry … you need to then copy the text layer and use it over the gradient as a track matte (alpha). The it will cut out the gradient into the shape of the text.

August 20, 2007 at 8:00 pmWell, Franca, good news. I just recorded a tutorial on how to jsut exactly what your asking. It’s rendering now, then I’ll upload it to my site.
All I ask is you register on my site, post your comments on the tutorial in it’s thread and hopefully post more too. 🙂
I’ll post the link when it’s done.

August 20, 2007 at 9:44 pmOk, well, it’s done. To watch it, go here.
https://www.freewebs.com/finalrenderfilms/Shining%5FText%5FTutorial.html
Sorry for the poor quality, and sorry that it loads slow. It’ll load for maybe a minute and then the loading will speed up really fast and then it’ll start playing.
I uploaded it on freewebs, so please don’t overdue the tiny 400 MB bandwith….
If creative cow wants to host it, I’m all ears…:)
and if anyone else would like to host it on their server, that would be great, thanks…

August 21, 2007 at 6:17 amI now understood and it worked!! But unfortunately not in the 3D-mode…. My text is in 3D.
In fact it is pretty hard to explain what I am searching for – it is often used for films to improve the logo of i.e. the production agency… dreamworks or Pegasus for instance.
I found an example!!:
https://www.thx.com/cinema/trailers.html there is the (luky me) smallest example called “Broadway” which shows pretty well what I mean! (Hope that I am allowed to post this link :))Greetz,
Franca
