im on a 2.5 dual core running 10.4, 4.5 gig ram, 20″ cinema, display and using a gl2 cam and fc studio 5 with all upgrades. until recently i had a dsr 11 dvcam deck so this problem was overlooked until now.
when i open imovie everthing working perfectly, cam recognized preview enabled and i am able to capture however its a pain to do it in imovie.

fcp recognizes and controls the gl2 however when trying to capture preview is disabled and even when using the NOW capture option i get a message: this operation could not be completed as there is no video

ive been searching and looking everywhere for a solutions. please help
    that you….

I understand you pain… FCP doesn’t like the Canon GL2, I know that for sure. You mentioned that you can capture in iMovie but its a pain to edit. Well, why don’t you just import the quicktime files that you created when you captured in iMovie? There’s got to be a way to do that since a file has to be written before you can use it. Give that a try!

thats what i have been doing. its a pain to do anything in imovie i believe. what irks me the most is that i cannot use the timecode embedded to automatically cut my clips at start/stops of the camera with imovie… or can i? if that is possible then i guess ill have to adapt…
what you are saying is that there is no way to make gl2 work with fcp?

I use FCP 5 and the Canon GL2 for capture on occation and I’ve never had a problem. It reads the cam fine. Try re-installing FCP. Do you have an Ext. Firewire drive also? This can be a prob. sometimes. Putting the ext. drive on a firewire pci card cures it.

yes i actually have an 800 fw 600gig maxtor external drive. i noticed a conflict when connecting the drive and some other devices but never associated this problem with the gl2. ive always had them both connected ill try it without the drive
as far as finacut pro goes i installed it not long ago on a formatted drive so i dont think its that large a problem. im thinking more along the preferences for fcp because again imovie recognizes it fine

Well, try adding another firewire card to your system if you have a free slot. Both of my systems have two firewire cards in them, no problems at all.
