  • Gig tomorrow! Wireless receiver- Mic or Line into ENG Camera- which one?

Posted by Justin Ferar on August 12, 2005 at 10:21 pm

I have a Samson UHF series One lav systems.
The receiver has a level setting switch. -30 -20 and -10.
The interface is mini XLR from the reveiver into XLR on the camera (JVC GY-DV5000U)
    Which setting is correct?

Also, I have the camera set to “mic” which has worked fine so far with the receiver.
Shouldn’t this be set to “line”?
On the last shoot the audio guy changed all the settings and I’m trying to make sure I’m setting everything back correctly.

    Thanks for your help!

Line is for a line level ! You have a mic use the mic level. Did you try line I am sure you will hear the difference. Test before use.

[Tom] “Line is for a line level ! You have a mic use the mic level.”

Well, this is not exactly good logic in all cases.

Many wireless mic receivers have a LINE-level OR MIC-level output (some switchable between line or mic, and some not.)
Looks like this particular Wireless receiver output HAS a “Mic/Line” switch.

Connect the receiver to the camera input.
If you set the camera to “MIC-level”, switch the Wireless Receiver’s output to “Mic.”
If you set the camera to “LINE-level”, switch the Wireless Receiver’s output to “Line.”
(In many cameras, the LINE level will be less noisy (less hissy), so if the wireless & camera sound better with the LINE settings, use them.)

Put on some good HEADPHONES connected to the camera to test and wear them DURING the shoot.
To test: With the talent (or a stand-in) speaking normally, switch the Wireless slowly between the -30, -20, -10, 0 settings on the Mic and observe which gives the best, undistorted and less-noisy audio.
    That’s your best setting.
