I am working on C4D R10.111 and I am running out an animation render in which both the camera and multiple objects in my scene move. It is strictly lit using an HDR probe placed onto a sky object. Currently I am looking at around an hour for every 2 seconds of video to render and it totals up to 7 seconds. My question is, can I bake the GI from my HDR and if so what is the procedure. I am familiar with the baking tag, but unsure of where to place the baked texture or which options to enable in the tag. Also, should I forget the baking option and stick with an animation setting for GI? Thank you in advanced.

You can’t just bake the whole scene because the baked GI won’t account for moving GI shadows. What you might be able to do is bake everything that that doesn’t recieve shadows from a moving object.

In that case I would collect all objects to be baked under a null and then run Render>Bake Object on the null. Check the illumination box, fill out the other options you want, and let’er rip. Cinema will automatically create duplicates of those objects and give the new objects the appropriate materials.

The next thing you would do is select those new materials and in the illumination tab, uncheck receive GI. You might be able to uncheck generate GI for some of them, depending on how much reflected light they would cast on the unbaked objects.

Finally, you would give the baked objects a complositing tag and uncheck the “seen by GI” box. That will prevent the objects from casting GI shadows.

Thanks for the reply Adam. The scene I have setup actually has no shadows, but only reflections. Are reflections effected by the GI?

GI shouldn’t be a problem with reflections since they’ll see the backed geometry. I think…. 😉
