Ghosting effect on credit roll
I have a project shot in 24p with a title crawl and a credit roll. It seems the text — as it rolls or crawls by, produces a slight “ghosting” image effect as each letter and word moves by. It’s readable, but looks a little disturbing and not 100% smooth flowing.
It this because of 24p and the out-put for video is 23.978?
Anyway to resolve or improve this issue?

What happens if you slow the crawl down? The ghosting might be because it is moving too fast for 24p and just needs to be slowed down.

Yes, I did do that John. And it did help some some, or at least it minimized the effect. It’s still basically there, just not as pronounced.
I thought about doing the titles in another sequence at 29.98 frames, outputting that to a Quicktime, then importing that at 24. Don’t know if that would smooth things out perfectly, or I’m not even certain what happens to the transparency on just a roll or crawl when imported by itself.
Type has to lay on top — of moving video in the background.
May have to live with it the way it is….thanks.

Does it have anything to do with the “Drop Shadow”?

I went in and removed the drop shadow on the crawl per your suggestion, and I do believe it made a bit o’ difference….enough to warrant getting rid of it.The font is the color white, and needed a drop shadow (or something) to keep the letters from blending into some parts of the background…
so….question:
Is it advisable to change the color of the font to something else — so it would not blend into the background?
I’m not certain what color to use that wouldn’t be “jinky looking” on the eyes.
Any opinion?
Good suggestion on the drop shadow removal….it did seem to help.

Yellow fonts are used a lot and seem to be acceptable. You could also add a stoke to the font to give it an outline. White font with a black stroke instead of a black shadow. Not sure if that would make it any worse.

One thing I have read and learned is NOT to use a pure white for text,
as there could be “issues.”
So, you could go to the color picker and tone down the white to something else.Yellow was suggested. Another suggestion is picking a color that fits the
theme of the video.And yes, play around with adding an outline to the font.
Also, look thru the Font selection, and maybe pick a new font.

Patrick is right, you should make sure that your whites are broadcast legal. That “something else” should be Broadcast White which is RGB 235,235,235. I’m surprised that the titles aren’t broadcast legal right out of the box. I guess Apple feels that broadcast is dead and the Internet is the only viable delivery medium for the future. lol 😉

Well John, I did add a bit of color to it, and a stroke. I slowed it down just a tad more. I think it as acceptable now. Maybe not 100% perfect as if it were 29.98 frames, but still acceptable.

It looks acceptable now Patrick. I did add a stroke, and changed the opacity to 90%. I reads OK now. It’s not as smooth looking as a 29.98 frame rate, but smooth enough.
