Totally new with V-Log. Just bought a GH5 that comes with V-Log. Started looking into what this $100 option would do.

Right off the back, the V-Log seems to improve the dynamic range (DR) from10 to 12 f/stop. It seems to help when you have very high contrast scene that you need to bring out the detail in the very white/bright and the very black/shadow. But the unadjusted footage is flat/dull/gray which needs to be “graded”.

    Here’s my questions:

For other scenes (not as extreme contrast), do you keep it in V-Log, or do you switch it back to your normal profile (like natural)? I guess if I would save a lot of effort and time if I don’t have to grade every single clip.

And, can someone tell me what does “grading V-Log” involved? Please tell me as much as you can, because I am a total novice when it comes to this.

    Thanks.

How you save your video depends on the end use of the video. Are you shooting family videos, YouTube Videos, or doing professional work?

I personally only use V-Log-L when shooting with my GH5, and V-Log when shooting with my S1H. When doing a two camera shoot, the footage can be perfectly matched in post.

Preset profiles seem to have far less tolerance when your exposure is less than perfect, whereas with V-Log you can often save some pretty messed up exposures.

The downside to V-log is you must know how to color grade. Color grading has a very steep learning curve, but you can learn enough basics to play with V-Log by watching tutorials on YouTube.

Color Grading Software is also necessary. I would recommend the free version of Black Magic DaVinci Resolve to experiment with. Black Magic also offers some very good tutorial videos on their website that are free.

I am a serious video maker, definitely not prof. Just want to create video for memory on my travel and my family.

I have the free version of Davinci Resolve on my computer. I have dabbled into it a few times. I understand the concept of grading in Resolve by am a lot more comfortable with Lumetri Color in Premiere Pro CC, which is my preferred NLE.

Someone had suggested that grading is more than just adjusting the brightness and contrast. Is it where LUT comes to the picture?

Exactly how LUT differs from adjusting the Lumetri Color in the adjustment layer? Is it something I create and save as LUT? Is there something that’s built-in in Premiere Pro CC? Is there any free download in the web, and how good are they?

    Thanks.

This guy helped me a lot to do a quick, true-to-life color correction in VLOGL.

Channel mixer + curve adjustment, and you’re done. Works wonders.
