Gh1 HDMI Output
Posted by Nigel Thompson on August 29, 2010 at 2:06 pmHey guys:
Does anyone know if HDMI output is available on the GH1 yet. Weather via the PTool hack or otherwise. im thinking about getting one soon but wanna connect my vx9 monitor to it and record to a ki Pro occasionally, so i wanna make sure i can get high quality output via HDMI
Thanks

August 31, 2010 at 1:49 amThe GH1’s HDMI output jack can only be used for playback of video previously recorded on a SD memory card in the camera. It’s not supported by Panasonic — or by the 3rd party firmware hack — for live output during preview or during recording.
Further, if you’re thinking of buying a GH1 with the intention of modifying its firmware, research & select your camera purchase carefully. The factory-installed firmware in GH1 cams manufactured since approx. early June 2010 can’t be modified. A few (very few) brand-new GH1 cams can be found with the older “hackable” firmware, but there are many more older used GH1 cams (available via eBay, etc.) that can be modified.
See:
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/280/2487Meanwhile, a new model cam (the “GH2”, or whatever it will be called) is expected from Panasonic before the end of this year. It’s widely expected to announced by the time of the Photokina expo 9/21/10. Stay tuned for specs, pricing & availability.

August 31, 2010 at 5:20 pmHey Peter:
Thanks for the reply. Yup found out all of the above upon doing further research about the GH1.I have since found out about the new nikon D3100 which i have settled on since im a nikon addict and already have a fleet of nikkor lenses that would make anyone jealous.
I really dont see these DSLR’s as pro video cameras because of ther lack of real audio options, high compression scemes and a bunch or other things. BUT the quality of video that comes out of theses things cannot be denied.
The minute Canon, nikon or whoever figure out or decide to make these things modular for extra functionality and put better sensors in that can do the 4k still res in video …. we are going to have some fireworrks on our hands and panavision and the like are going to have to rethink their biz, as they are already.
Im buying mine because its easier to travel with. the RED One or HVX200 w/letus tend to get bothersome when hoping off a plane everyweek. and more often my videos use narration anyway so……
Im sure nikon are going to knock some socks off after this so the d3100 will be a start for me and i can add the big boy when it comes along.

August 31, 2010 at 10:08 pmThe other good thing about this camera is its HDMI out. Which will afford me the ability to tether an AJA Kipro to it and bypass the H264 codec all together, but of course that will depend on if there are no menu crap coming up on the screen. when i get it ill let you know how things go.

November 9, 2010 at 10:50 pmWoah! Peter, thank you for your response to this previous question. I almost made a huge mistake and bought a new GH1 that I now realize may not be “hackable.”
You say a very select few new GH1s do come with the older “hackable” firmware. Is there any way for one to tell which ones these are, particularly if ordering online? If one is actually in the store is there a firmware version to look for?
Thanks!

See:
https://wiki.eoshd.com/wiki/GH1_Hackable_ModelsTo the best of my knowledge, regardless of the serial number, if you want to replace the firmware currently installed in the camera with a hacked version, the cam’s current firmware must be 1.32 or LOWER.
GH1 firmware versions higher than 1.32 can’t be replaced with hacked versions of the firmware.
YMMV.
