  • getting wrong video format when importing .mov file

    Hi,

I have received some footage captured with a panasonic AG-DV2500.
The files play perfectly in Quicktime and VLC. It appears at it should be, HD widescreen format etc.
When I import it into Sony Vegas Pro 10 it opens as if it is Custom (720×576, 25.000 fps) and the video looks tremendously stretched.

If iI go to Project Properties and choose Mach Media Settings it stays at the same 720×576 format.
If I change it manually to HDV 720-25p (1280×720, 25.000 fps) I get black horizontal bars on both sides and the images stays in the same format.

    How do I solve this?

    Many thanks

    Kind regards

    Joao

Unless you have the model number wrong, a Google search says that machine is a DVCAM, DV, Mini DV format player/recorder so forget setting Vegas to HDV.
Set your project properties to PAL DV Widescreen (720×576, 25.000 fps) and make sure that the Pixel aspect ratio is set to 1.4568 (PAL DV Widescreen) and see what happens.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
I have tried that and it doesn’t work. I get the black horizontal bars on the sides and the video it self remais almost “square”.

I have imported the same files in FCP and it opens fine, widescreen etc. Although when I open the FORMAT it shows me all the info about the file and it says:

    Vid Rate: 25 fps
    Frame Size: 720×576
    Compressor: DV PAL
    Data Rate: 3.6 MB/s
Pixel Aspect: PAL – CCIR 601

How do I make this look the same in Vegas?

    kind regards

    Joao

Joao, see if this works for you.
Make sure your Project Properties are set to PAL DV Widescreen, drop a clip on the timeline, open up Pan/Crop, right-click in the centre and select Match Output Aspect.
Let me know if that helps.

You may have changed too many things in your current project. I would start over and do as Mike recommends. Start a new project with the project setting: PAL DV Widescreen (720×576, 25.000 fps). Drop your footage onto the timeline and it should look perfect.

    Hi Mike,

I have tried that. Now the video looks widescreen it cropped out a portion of the video (bottom and top).
This is not a solution cos I loose a lot of theimage in the original frame.

    is there another way?

    may thanks

Hi John, thanks for your post.

I have tried what you and Mike suggested: new project with setting: PAL DV Widescreen (720×576, 25.000 fps) and nothing…

Uploading a file so you can see the diference between what VLC displays and what vegas displays:

    1732_vlsvsvegas.jpg.zip

the video on the left monitor is from VLC and on the right from vegas.

    thank you

Right-click on the event that is on the timeline and look at the Media tab and see what format Vegas thinks the file is. It may be interpreting it incorrectly and you may have to adjust the Pixel Aspect Ratio if it is not correctly displaying as PAL Widescreen.

    Bingo!!!
    That solved it John.
Somehow Vegas did not set the pixels aspect right and it was 1.0 (square).
Changed it to 1.4568 (pal dv widescreen) in event properties/media and it did the job.
Since I only have 6 big clips (events) this is easy to change. In the case that I have a lot of events is there a way to change this setting (or any other) for all of them at once?

Thank you very much for the support.

    regards

There were still tiny little black stripes in the bottom and top of the frame but with Crop/Match Output Aspect solved it…
    Great!!!
