When I click on a marker in the browser, fcp opens up a sublcip in the viewer, made from that marker. Is there a way to click on a marker and have fcp open up the master clip in the viewer, with the playhead set on the position of the marker you clicked on instead?

    Nope…

Gotta open the master clip, but then you can step thru the markers by pressing SHIFT-M to go forward, and OPT-M to go backwards.

Well, if they did, then using the markers as subclips wouldn’t work. They have to choose one way to do things, and obviously they chose the way it is.

I like the way it is myself…

    Hi Shane,

If you use those subclips in your timeline though, and then you loose all your footage somehow, if you try to re batch-capture all your footage, isn’t fcp unable to recognize what that footage (from the subclips) was?

I know that when you click on a subclip in the timeline and hit shift-F (which usually finds where that clip is, in the browser,) fcp is unable to recognize it.

I like the ease of using subclips too, but feel like it’s a lot to risk if you can’t recapture them after some kind of computer crash or something. Maybe I’m wrong though, and got this in my head incorrectly.

“isn’t fcp unable to recognize what that footage (from the subclips) was?”

As long as the timecode and reel information on the QT file is correct there is no reason FCP should not be able to recapture it.

    All the best,

    Tom

[Aaron M] “if you try to re batch-capture all your footage, isn’t fcp unable to recognize what that footage (from the subclips) was?”

No…adding to what Tom said, the subclip itself isn’t a stand alone thing…it is a small data file that points to a small portion of a larger media file. That media file is linked to the master clip. If that file goes offline, then you capture the master clip and the subclip then points back to the small section of that clip like it did originally. That Subclip contains the same information…reel number and master clip name.

[Aaron M] “I know that when you click on a subclip in the timeline and hit shift-F (which usually finds where that clip is, in the browser,) fcp is unable to recognize it.”

I don’t know what you mean by this. I have a subclip in the timeline…I hit shift F, and it finds the subclip in the Browser. FCP does recognize it. What FCP won’t do is find the MASTER CLIP in the browser from that subclip…and yet, that is annoying. It will open the master file from the drive, but it will not match back to the master clip it came from. And yes, that is a little annoying. Media Management that Apple needs to work on.

    Shane,

Load the clip into the viewer and then control click on the timecode window. From your list of markers there you can send the playhead to one. Not as handy as via the browser, but it helps me a little. You can also do this with sequence markers in the canvas.

    Hope that helps.
