Getting the rights to use a song.
Hello everyone. I’m producing an 48 episode animated web series and I’ve found a song that I think really fits the vibe of the show. It’s by Charlie Poole and was written in 1926. I believe Sony owns the rights to the song but does anyone know how I can go about getting the right to use it in my project. Also, what does something like that normally cost?

There isn’t a price norm as it revolves around what they pretend to be views/ears but what you know to be the negotiation. You can contact Sony Music directly (if they are the right holders) and aquire rights.

Take a quick side-trip past B-Z rights and permissions’ web site to get familar with some of the lingo.

Since the copyright is up on the song, but not the recording, I’d consider rerecording it. This can be done pretty inexpensively nowadays. Then, you’d own the rights to the music! Good luck!
