  • Getting shot media from camera to my system

I’m taking a class in filmmaking and we are using DV cameras to shoot our projects. The camera I have this weekend to use is the Panasonic DVC-80.

After taping some scenes, how do I get the footage onto my laptop so that I can start editing in SV Pro 10? Is there some sort of a cable I can purchase that connects the camera to my laptop, and if so, where do I attached it on the camera, and does it simply go into my USB port on my system?

    Thank you.

DV is transferred via Firewire (IEEE 1394) connection. The first thing you need to check is if your laptop has a firewire port. If it doesn’t, you won’t be able to capture the video unless you add a firewire port via a PC Card slot or something. Hardly worth it for a camera you don’t own.

If your laptop does have a firewire port you’ll need a firewire cable. They come with different connectors. There is a 6 pin and a 4 pin connector. I assume the camera has a 4 pin plug. Depending on which your laptop has (usually 4 pin if it’s built-in and 6 pin if it’s on a PC Card) you’ll need a cable that matches (i.e., 4-to-4 or 4-to-6)
