  • Getting rid of vignette banding

Posted by Nico Jones on December 11, 2009 at 11:14 am

    Hallo,

I’ve applied a vignette to some footage in After Effects that contains a lot of white. The client wants a very subtle vignette, and as a result we’re seeing some banding on the outputs, especially in lossier formats such as WMV.

I know this is a somewhat inevitable result, but is there any way to minimize this effect? I’ve tried applying blurs in AE, but if anything that makes the problem worse!

    Many thanks,

    Nico

Set your project to 16bit or add a small amount of noise to the layer will reduce the banding.

However, it doesn’t matter what you do in after effects if you are exporting WMVs! Ideally you would want to export as 16 bit TIFs or something similar before mastering.

    Great stuff, thanks Chris.

Yeah the WMV was just for approval. TIFFs it is!
