Getting footage off a DVD
Posted by Gabriel Solomon on February 9, 2015 at 2:57 amA client gave me a finished DVD of unedited video footage that he wants me to edit. What is the easiest way to get the footage into Sony Vegas Pro 12 into an editable format?

February 9, 2015 at 3:34 amGo to File – Import – DVD Camcorder Disc… on a new project and it will bring it in on the timeline for you.

February 9, 2015 at 1:33 pmCopy the DVD to your computer. Open the VIDEO_TS folder and drag the VTS_01_0.IFO file to your Vegas timeline. The entire program will be there with no gaps between VOB files.
Note: if you only have one VOB file, change the extension to MPG and drag that to your timeline.

February 9, 2015 at 9:52 pmI’m stunned. I never knew you could put an .ifo file directly to the timelime.

February 10, 2015 at 1:41 pmThanks Jorma. Gary James is the guy who first posted that technique.
He’s also the guy who came up with Timeline Tools, a great and free app that just keeps getting better over time!! -

February 11, 2015 at 1:57 amIf I wished to combine a few shorter DVD’s from old holidays than I suppose that this would be a start. Presumably this file on timeline would have to be rendered out again so that I could bring it into DVDA?
Is there any similar tool that would give DVDA it’s original menu back without having to recreate it?
Would I be better of dragging more VTS_01_0.IFO files to the timeline?
If the total size were to exceed 8.5gb I suppose that I could put it all onto a Blu-ray disc?
Thanks in advance
