  • Getting Flutter when slowing down footage.

Posted by Steve Cohen on November 23, 2013 at 3:55 am

I’m working on a spot in FCP 6 with footage that was shot on a Canon 6D in H264 in a mode called ALL-I. It was shot 1920 x 1080 at 29.97fps

I converted the footage in Compressor to Apple ProRes and kept it at 1920 x 1080 at 29.97fps.

The footage looks great at normal speed but when I try to slow it down I get a bad flutter.

My time line is 1920 x 1080 at 29.97fps Apple ProRes.

What can I do to get rid of this flutter. I tried De-Interlace, Flicker Free and Shift Fields and I can’t get rid of it.

    Thanks for the help.

Depending on how much you slow-mo the flutter is normal, going under 30% will give you that effect. Frame blending can compensate some, but will start looking ugly at a certain point. You should try Twixtor to smooth that out. I use FCPX which has the option of optical flow that works very well.

Thanks. When I did 20% slowdown it looked OK, but I need to go slower than that. Like 50%.

I’ll take a look at Twixtor.

da Vinci 10 lite (free) now has optical flow slo mo in its edit timeline. Motion also has optical flow slo mo. Lots of options for free although I have heard excellent reports about Twixtor.

Frame blending is one of those things that needs to be experimented with but FCP in general is not a good tool for slo mo speed changing

I tried a demo version of Twixtor last night and it worked great.
It is expensive thought. I might try the others.
