getting desperate now
Posted by James Ewart on August 2, 2012 at 9:53 amHello All,
Sorry third post I know.
So if I assemble a sequence in the primary storyline (let’s call it v1) and then decide that in fact I would like to use those shots over an interview in FCP 7 or Premiere it would be pretty straightforward to move this shots up to v2 or v3 and lay my interviews underneath it on v1 (or the primary storyline).
But FCPX won’t let me do this or will it somehow.? Can I just grab those shots somehow and move them off the primary storyline…
Many thanks in advance

August 2, 2012 at 10:00 amI can tai shots one at a time but it won’t allow me to select a group of shots and move them above the primary storyline. Inflexible. I guess the workaround would be to select them and create a new compound clip and then drag that into v2 but it seems a cumbersome workaround to me.
Am I missing something here?

August 2, 2012 at 10:16 am2 options:
Select all clips you want to move and press option-command-up arrow. Reverse works if you want to drop clips from connected to the primary option-command-down arrow.
Add your interview as connected clip and than drag it underneath the primary. Video can also be placed as connected clips underneath the primary. If you want to edit your interview convert it to a secondary storyline and it’ll behave as one clip and you can edit in context. If you want to see your talking head at any time while it is underneath the primary just add a gab clip (option-w) and for this period in the primary and the video underneath will be visible.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

August 2, 2012 at 10:58 amYou can also Shift+Drag up or down to move a clip up or down the stack.
Option+Drag will drag a duplicate copy of the clip and place it above the existing clip. -

August 2, 2012 at 3:02 pmIn the primary, you can select one clip, then find the last clip you want to select and shift click that clip. This will select everything between your first clip and last clip in the primary.
Then hit command-option-up-arrow (as has been mentioned) or right click and choose “Lift from Storyline”.
One limitation is that if you want to move an audio only clip BACK in to the primary, you can’t use the coammnd-option-downarrow command. You can only do that by dragging on audio only clips. Video based clips, including generators, work just fine.

August 2, 2012 at 3:49 pmwow I can also drag a clip “below” the Primary storyline underneath ago which magical becomes transparent and it behaves ilk a normal video track.
Not having full trim functionality in anything but primary storyline seems…well….it just seems silly to me but I’m going to have to be more disciplined in how I work I guess…will I find it restrictive? At the moment I am for sure

August 2, 2012 at 9:31 pmDon’t forget letter “P.” It places X into position mode. Then you can drag a clip off to the right and the empty space fills in with a gap clip.
