also I have a wmv file from the women’s basketball team that I wanted to convert to an mov file so that I could get it into either fcp4.5 or dvdsp3 ultimately it needs to go onto a dvd any advice

Compression Master 3.1 can do .MOV to .WMV. It’s the most flexible encoding tool on the Mac today.

The other good solution is Sorenson Squeeze, which focuses on ease of use.

Unfortunately, Autodesk appears not to have done any engineering on Cleaner for nearly two years. It hasn’t been officially cancelled, but there haven’t been any signs of life either.

Flip4Mac Studio can go from MOV to WMV and WMV to MOV. The WMV encoder plug in can be used in QuickTimePro, Cleaner, Sorenson Squeeze 4.1 (as well as Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, iMovie).

Todd, welcome back! 😉 The F4M Player plugin will also allow you to do straight WMV imports into FCP. Of course, you will have to render it once you do to whatever timeline codec you’re working in, but it is a rather simple solution.
