Getting aspect ratios right…
I created some an animation in the 1024×576 ratio, and have edited it in premiere using the PAL D1/DV Widescreen setting.
Everything seems fine. If I play back the file in VLC, it has a proper aspect, but in WMP it is a 4:3 image, and squashed. VLC has better settings for allowing me to view it in whatever format I want.
I am confused now though.
What do I do to:
Put it on a DVD so it can be viewed on a normal TV (not necessarily a widescreen TV)in its proper aspect of 16:9?
Make a flash version that isn’t basically a 4:3 with black bars at the top and bottom? -

You edited it in Widescreen, but how did you export it? To PAL Widescreen?
If so, what does it matter what it looks like in Windows Media Player. That player isn’t really designed to play a full DV AVI anyway. What is the ultimate goal? DVD? If so, widescreen or 4:3?

Yeah, I edited it in widescreen, and exported it using no codec under the Microsoft codec. I kept the ratio 720×576, but the pixel ratio was PAL DV Widescreen ( (1.4) or something).
I know different media players will treat it differently, but if it is a 720×576 image, isn’t that just 4:3?
My ultimate goal is to keep the widescreen ratio, put it on a DVD, and when viewed on a regular 4:3 TV, it is letterboxed – I can see the whole width with no squeeze. Likewise on a widescreen TV, I would like it to fil the screen (naturally)
Do I have to make a 4:3image that basically INCLUDES black bars as part of it (therefore reducing the area that the actual film is on)??

I know different media players will treat it differently, but if it is a 720×576 image, isn’t that just 4:3?”No its not 4:3 its an anamorphic screen aspect ratio, widescreen and normal have the same pixel count, its the virtual pixel size(1.x) that makes it either wide or normal, if put on a dvd most late model dvd player will detect the widescreen tv or lack of, and playback either widescreen or letterboxed 4:3

It is strange. I have done the following:
I set up the project as DV PAL Widescreen.
I exported the project twice – the first keeping the pixel aspect ratio at DV PAL Widescreen (1.422), and once changing the pixel aspect ratio to DV PAL (1.067). This is in the export movie settings.
I then converted these large AVI files to MPEG4, used NERO to burn them to DVD, and the SQUARE pixel (DV PAL 1.067) was the one that remained widescreen and not squahed when viewed…
