    Hi everyone:

Recently, I gave a video encoded with the h264 to a colleague in order to dub it but when she put the file into Pro Tools the playback was not smooth at times. I have read that it is a mistake to encode a video in h264 for Pro Tools so I have been looking for the codecs supported by the software. Apparently, all codecs create very large files. Isn’t there a codec for Pro Tools that creates normal file sizes?

    Thanks.

ProTools should be able to work with H.264. What are the specs of the file? Data rate, FPS, size, wrapper? Alternative codecs would be Apple ProResProxy or Avid DNxHD36.

I’d always given h.264 until recently, when my mixer asked for ProRes LT. ProRes proxy should be fine too. The key is being an I-Frame codec, as it’s less processsor intensive. File size is less important.
