June 2, 2008 at 2:28 pmPlace the two text layers in a group above your third layer. Make the group with the two text layers a Stencil Luma or Stencil Alpha Blend Mode. Hope this helps.

June 2, 2008 at 4:00 pmI would just add that if you wanted to see the text as well you could use the following recipe:
Group 1 Normal
Text 1 Stencil Alpha
Text 2 Stencil Alpha
BG Graphic Normal
Group 2 Pass Through
Text 1 Copy Normal
Text 2 Copy NormalActually Stephen’s method results in a much more interstesting effect anyway; when I was playin’ around in Motion this morning I realized this has nice fututure possibilities for quasi-abstract text backgrounds.

June 2, 2008 at 6:56 pmThanks Stephen and Burt that works perfect, one more question though
can I mirror the position properties on the duplicate text layer automatically?
Thanks, Geoff -

June 2, 2008 at 6:59 pmAre you asking that the text potion be the same for both text layers?

June 2, 2008 at 7:15 pmHi, Stephen
I’d like to get the position etc from effect text layer to the visible “copy” layer (without manually copying the keys)
Group 1 Normal
Text 1 Stencil Alpha (position, etc from here)
Text 2 Stencil Alpha
BG Graphic Normal
Group 2 Pass Through
Text 1 Copy Normal (to here)
Text 2 Copy NormalThanks, Geoff

June 2, 2008 at 8:32 pmIf you select the “Group 1 normal” layer and hit the Command and D keys it will make a duplicate of that layer. Change the blend modes to resemble the recipe for the 2nd group.
If you already did that and changed the text so they no longer line up, do the following. To select certain parameters such as position select it/them in the Inspector. Drag your cursor over to your Project Pane or Timeline. Hover the curser over the text you want to apply the parameters to and the curser arrow will turn into a curved/hocked shaped arrow. It will then take on those parameters. Hope that helps.
