Suddenly, PP wants to generate peak files for every file I import. Worse yet, if I open an existing project, wait forever for the peak files to be generated, save, close, and reopen the same file, it starts the generating process all over again. This even happens if I start a new project.

I have a case with tech support, but it may be days before I hear back and I’m on deadline.

I’ve deleted the preferences, changed scratch discs, moved files to different discs, cleaned the cache, even cleaned my system with a program called Cocktail. Nothing has helped.

System = Mac Pro dual quad, 16GB RAM, 4x1TB hard drives.

    ANY SUGGESTIONS????

My experience is that the cache files sometimes become corrupted. My solution is to go to the cache directory and delete all the cache files, pek, cfa, and ims for the project and let PrPro rebuild them from scratch.

Wish I could help. Is every single file reconformed when you open the project or just some? The cache directory will tell you which files have -1, -2, appended to their names depending on how many times they’ve been conformed.

Every file. Even weirder (at least I’ve never seen this until now), it’s writing the conformed files to the directories where the source files exist.

I may try re-installing CS5.5 just to see what happens.

That’s a setting you can change in preferences.

What kind of files are you importing?

I doubt if that will help.

I’ve tried several file types, all HD, AVCHD, h.264 (canon 5D), ProResLT and ProRes. All have been problematic. I also tried importing an m4f file (exported in PP using DVD-BluRay settings), and this did not cause the peak file problem. However, I’ve been working on this project – my first in PP – for several weeks and only in the last few days have I encountered the problem. Something obviously changed or got corrupted.

I’ve heard of this happening if PPro was installed by a non-administrator user account.

Something on a Mac about these files being written by software that doesn’t have permissions to write back to/update the database that tells the software where these files are…so they get made again.

Where is the cache database targeted to?

Did you install the Adobe software under a user account that doesn’t have administrator privileges?

I tested this with Adobe Tech support, and this was not the issue. Good idea though.

Hmmm…typically that’s a common cause of this issue.

Hey David, that preferences option seems to be the problem. There’s a box to check if you want to save the cache files with the source files in media prefs. I must have checked this a few days ago without thinking. What a mistake!

I unchecked the box, let the application do it’s generating of peak files one more time, and now things are back to normal.

Advice to anyone reading: LEAVE THIS BOX UNCHECKED!!!!!!
