Generating a film cutlist help, workflow problem!
A friend of mine had film telecined to DVCAM tape to do an offline edit. He wasn’t given keycode burn or any burn for that matter and would still like to go back to film when he is done with his edit.
At this point is this still feasible, or is all lost because preparation was not done properly for this workflow?

You can do this manually, but it’s slightly risky because mistakes are hard to find.
If the film lab reels were telecined continuously (and correctly), and there is a hole punch frame, then you can create a list of hole punch frames and their film edge code (keycode) manually from the negatives (or have someone at the lab do it).
Then you could capture in complete lab reels to Final Cut. Then make a note of the video timecode at that hole punch frame. Export the captured clip info from FCP browser as a batch list and import into Cinema Tools. Within Cinema Tools you can manually set that punch frame within the database to have the proper video timecode and film edgecode (keycode).
Of course, if any frames were dropped during capture, this could present problems. You might want to digitize from the “monitor out” of your capture deck, and turn on the timecode display, to get your own version of timecode burn in.
Also, I think some negative cutters offer the service of making their own database (timecode to keycode relationships) and this might work to allow them to cut negative correctly.
